Tesla begins production of the Model Y in Germany in March

Tesla confirmed in an internal email that it plans to begin delivery of the Model Y Performance from Grünheide in March. Previously, the change in the component only hinted at this.

Staff email in Germany, published on the German . website Tesla drivers and friends Forum (TFF), mentions March as the expected start of delivery of the Y Performance Model from Germany’s Gigafactory. “The performance model from Berlin is now also available to order and is expected to reach us from March,” the company wrote.

Observers had already suspected this, as a change was made to the component in January. The black and white Model Y delivery date is now March, and for other paint finishes it’s May – previously only said “early 2022” for the Performance Edition. Delivery scheduled for March could also mean importing performance models from China, but the email confirms possible production in Germany.

The component update also made a few other changes for 2022, including the long-range model, which still comes from China. Thanks to the new battery, the WLTP range of the Y LR has been increased from 507 to 533 kilometers. However, Tesla only homologated the version with less aerodynamic 20-inch tires according to WLTP. With 19-inch wheels, the Model Y has an “estimated” range of 565 kilometers – but that’s not an official WLTP value, which is why 537 kilometers is mentioned in the configurator. The Y Performance model with the new battery is listed as having a range of 514 km, and the component previously listed 480 km.

The higher range was confirmed thanks to the “improved battery power density” in the Tesla email. The cells may still come from LGES, but the new battery is internally called “5L”, and the predecessor was called “5C”. It is said that the usable battery capacity will increase from about 77 to 79 kWh.

From a technical standpoint, other changes for 2022 include a 15-volt lithium-ion battery to replace the existing 12-volt battery. In addition, according to the email from Tesla, a “faster processor for improved operation” has been installed. This is likely the well-known AMD Ryzen with a Model S Refresh rather than an Intel processor. Since some Model Y Performance cars in China have already been delivered with this processor, this move was to be expected.

Interesting for passengers and drivers: from now on, double-glazed windows will also be installed on the rear doors of the Model Y to improve acoustics. The standard parcel shelf should now contribute to this, in order to silence the noise from the luggage compartment. There is also an improved music system and windshield wiper blades.

All of the mentioned changes, from the battery to the windshield wipers, also apply to the Model 3 with immediate effect, and here the range increases to up to 626 kilometers of “estimated” range with 18-inch wheels and 602 kilometers according to WLTP with 19-inch wheels. One exception: the Model 3 still only had double-glazed windows on the front doors.

Giga Texas also starts by March – but with 4,680 cells

Grünheide isn’t the only place where deliveries are scheduled to begin in the first quarter. Electric You mentioned, based on insider information, that Tesla wants to deliver the first Model Y of the new plant in Texas before the end of the first quarter, in other words, by March. It remains to be seen whether conventional battery packs with 2,170 cells or structural battery packs with 4,680 cells will be installed here, as they were initially in Grünheide. The latter is considered possible. There may be confirmation of that Thursday night when Tesla presents its financial numbers for 2021.

With Model Y production in Texas and production of 4,680 cells several months behind schedule, another report from the past weeks is less surprising: According to information from ReutersTesla is delaying the start of Cybertruck production until the end of the first quarter of 2023. The reason for this is not only the shortage of 4,680 batteries. Tesla wants to review the Cybertruck in light of the growing competition in the electric pickup truck segment.
