India’s 271-mile Tata Nexon EV Max is putting the Tesla 3 on notice at just $22,800

It can be said that the Indian automaker Tata Motors is a company Tesla India – one of the largest car markets in the world. The reason we say this is that Tata Motors is doing in India what Tesla has done in pretty much every market it has intervened – democratizing the electric car. Tesla showed the world that electric cars are no less than the gas consumers we’ve all been used to for decades.

Tesla has also played a huge role in proving to many governments around the world that it is time to begin the transition to a purely electric future. India is one of those countries that is committed to such a future and the result of its EV drive is the Tata Nexon EV Max. When we compared it to other electric cars sold in America, what stood out was that the Nexon EV Max has more range while being less than half the price of a Tesla Model 3!

The Tata Nexon EV Max has a powerful drivetrain

To put things into perspective, the standard rear-wheel drive Tesla Model 3 costs $46,990 and is the perfect EV for long trips. The Tata Nexon EV Max costs 1,774,000 rupees which translates to just under $22,800, according to the conversion rate at the time this story was published. When fully charged, the Tesla Model 3 will, according to Tesla, run a range of 267 miles. The Tata Nexon EV Max, on the other hand, claims 271 miles per full charge.

Yes, the Tesla Model 3 is in a completely different league when it comes to performance as it would take 5.8 seconds to reach 60 mph. The Tata Nexon EV Max takes just under 9 seconds to do the same. The Tesla Model 3 will achieve a top speed of 140 mph while the Tata will only run 87 mph. But remember that the price difference is double!

Plus, while it might seem a little slow to us since we’re used to cars like the crazy Tesla Roadster, the Nexon EV Max is supposed to be driven in a country if you have an average daily commute speed of about 60 miles. In the clock, you fly. So in Indian road conditions, the Nexon EV Max is designed to be more than enough.

Don’t compromise on features or safety

With such a low price, you might think the Nexon EV Max puts safety at risk. However, this is not the case. The Nexon EV Max is based on the Tata Nexon internal combustion engine. This one has been crash tested by Global NCAP and given a full five-star safety rating in crash tests. This also made it the first model made in India to get this score. And while the Nexon EV Max hasn’t been tested yet, you can be sure it’s a safe car.

It has a good feature list too, given its price. The Nexon EV Max comes with features like air purifier, cooled seats, cruise control, four-stage regenerative braking, ESP, traction control, all-wheel disc brakes, hill assist, smartwatch integration, support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, A wireless charging pad for your smartphone and even an app that lets you know all the GPS and other telemetry information around the vehicle. The Nexon EV Max will charge from 0 to 80 percent in the required 56 minutes if you connect it to a 50 kW DC charger.

The true promise of the Tata Nexon EV Max

India will play a huge role in driving the entire world towards the electric vehicle revolution due to two simple factors. Firstly, there are a lot of people in India, and as electric vehicles become more popular there, the share of electric vehicles in the world will increase exponentially, and the more this technology is produced, the lower the total production cost of that technology for everyone. This is because higher production numbers mean more optimization and lower input costs. Second, India has the capacity, manpower, and affordable manpower to make electric cars for the masses.

Cars like the Tata Nexon EV Max make the distant future seem even closer. The fact that Tata built such a car for half the price of a Tesla Model 3 just shows that the future is electric and exciting! Speaking of which, if you want to see what Tata Motors’ futuristic electric car will look like, the Tata Affinia EV Concept and Tata Sierra Concept are good starting points.
