The DJI Mini 3 Pro just launched, but the king of drones is already rumored to be following it up with a compact and friendly indoor experience on the DJI FPV style.
According to leaks from Tweet embed And Tweet embedwhich were previously reliable sources for DJI rumors, the DJI Avata will be a much smaller version of the DJI FPV, a “First-Person View” drone that flies with a headset.
Some of the early renderings of the drone (below), which appears to be based on a DJI patent, shows a drone with large bracket guards and a completely different design than the DJI FPV. This indicates that it will be a so-called “cinewhoop” drone, known for being small, agile and ideal for indoor photography.
The PostDealsDrone claims that the “Avata is compact and weighs about 500 grams”, that it “can fly indoors” and “much better image quality” than the DJI FPV, with a camera that could be on the football field of the Mini 3 cutting edge. This drone has a relatively large 1 / 1.3 inch CMOS sensor, which can be useful for a drone designed for shooting primarily in low light indoor conditions.

Some other rumored features suggest the DJI Avata will be aimed at relatively novices rather than experienced pilots. Obviously, there will be a “headhunting mode”, which probably refers to target tracking, as well as “glasses” that can connect to your smartphone.
Interestingly, DealsDrone says “manual mode is not supported”, which is unusual for an FPV drone. It’s also clear that the DJI Avata has a “dramatically improved battery life,” which presumably refers to the DJI FPV’s relatively limited 20-minute flight time.
If you love the idea of filming indoor cinema videos like Tesla’s recent viral flyby of its Berlin Giga factory, DJI’s next drone could be an exciting, niche new option. And it looks like we won’t have to wait long for it to hit Earth, as DealsDrone anticipates a release date sometime “July to August.”
Analysis: The missing piece for DJI drones?
From bowling rides to Tesla’s impressive Giga Factory promo, tiny FPVs have been behind some impressive videos on social media in the past couple of years – so it would make perfect sense for DJI to finally make an indoor-friendly cinematic’ model.
The current DJI FPV is a lot of fun, but it’s very large and designed more for shooting outdoor videos, while its DJI Digital FPV system is an addition to existing drones. Meanwhile, it looks like the DJI Avata will be an all-around drone, in cinematic style, with a compact design and strut guards to make it safer for indoor flying.
Crucially, a camera similar to the one we recently saw on the DJI Mini 3 Pro is also rumored to be brought in. One of the big challenges for indoor photography is the relative lack of lighting, which is why FPV flyers often use GoPro cameras (or abstract versions of them) to capture the shots.
GoPro actually made a custom FPV version of their Hero 10 Black action camera for this purpose, as you can see in our hands-on GoPro Bones review. So it looks like GoPro and DJI could once again compete head-to-head in the drone space.
The difference between the GoPro Bones and the DJI Avata seems to be the audience you’re targeting. The GoPro camera is largely designed for DIY builders of the FPV drone community, who like to launch their drones manually.
But if the DJI Avata really lacks a manual mode, as rumors suggest, it could be geared more towards beginners and hobbyists who want to shoot events like weddings without the fancy pilot skills required of traditional FPV drones.
