Breakdown: Tesla will soon add a second screen to the Model 3 & Y suggests teardown

When Tesla unveiled the Model 3 in 2016, the biggest controversy about the car was that it lacked a second screen behind the steering wheel also called the instrument cluster.

The Model 3 eliminated the instrument cluster and transferred information such as speed and autopilot information to the main 15-inch touch screen in the center of the car. Once Tesla announced the Model Y, the EV maker continued that interior.

Since then, there have been sporadic reports of Tesla adding a head-up display to the two vehicles. However, Elon Musk has dropped these rumors several times until the broader Tesla community agreed that the vehicles will only have a single screen for the foreseeable future.

At least that’s for now. to me Tweet embed Who is the white-hatted Tesla hacker notorious for anticipating Tesla’s movements, it appears that the EV maker is looking to add a second screen to the Model 3 & Y.

Green as he is known on Twitter came to this conclusion after examining the AMD 3&Y media console. During the inspection, Green noticed that a connector not currently in use in the MCU was marked as a “Second Display”.

The first thing that comes to mind is perhaps Tesla added this open port not to specifically add a second connector to the Model 3 & Y, but instead simply use parts of the Model S & X that currently come with multiple display connectors.

However, Green also checked out the Model S&X MCUs and said that they differ significantly from the Model 3 & Y’s MCUs. This means that Tesla purposely added the second screen-domained connector on the Model 3 and Y.

As for when this second demo will appear, Green says he doesn’t have an exact date, but did provide an example of how he “played a similar story with the original ModelY with unmanned USB3 which was then published in a later review.”

This is definitely exciting and will undoubtedly make a lot of people happy. Despite this, the usual retrofit questions will likely be asked. As for retrofitting, Green says that would be impossible especially for Tesla vehicles with Intel’s MCU, as the latter has “a completely different strength, harness and other thickness of the unit.”

As of now, it’s hard to say exactly when Tesla plans to add a second display to the Model 3 & Y. However, we’ll make sure to keep you informed as we learn more about the situation. Until then, be sure to visit our site regularly for the latest updates.
