Cars with large, powerful engines, such as the Chevy Impala and Ford Explorer, have long been used by police departments in the United States. However, recently, police departments have switched to electric cars, like Tesla. The latest to join the wave of police EVs has been in Texas, where Dallas County has added three Tesla Model 3 vehicles to its fleet.
Dallas County Police added a Tesla Model 3, even though Tesla cars can’t be sold in Texas
The Dallas County Police Department has added three new Tesla Model 3 performance vehicles. This comes on the heels of police departments in California and New York that recently added electric vehicles to their fleets, CarBuzz reports.
Three Model 3s cost the Dallas County Police Department a total of $190,320. It is not known how the Dallas County Police Department purchased the Model 3s. Tesla is not allowed to sell its cars in Texas. It is one of the states with strict franchise laws.
Tesla and other start-up electric car manufacturers are barred from selling in Texas because they sell their cars directly to customers — not through a traditional dealership. To purchase a Model 3 in Texas, the customer must begin the online process and then pick up the EV in a state that does not have a franchise sale law.
Tesla Model 3 Performance Provides Rapid Acceleration for Dallas County Police
The most obvious advantage of the Tesla Model 3 to the Dallas County Police is its extremely fast acceleration. The premium performance is the fastest of the Model 3 models. With its twin electric motors and all-wheel drive, it boasts a 0-60 mph acceleration of just 3.1 seconds. The Model 3 has a top speed of 162 mph. As noted by CarBuzz, none of the 10 most stolen cars in the US can “Transcend Model 3.”
Electric vehicles, such as the Model 3, have inherent performance advantages over gas-powered vehicles. With the instant delivery of torque, electric cars can usually accelerate more quickly. Another advantage is that electric vehicles usually require less maintenance, as electric powertrains have fewer moving parts than gas-powered powertrains. Given the thousands of miles police cars drive each year, an easy-to-maintain vehicle like the Model 3 should be useful to the Dallas County Police.
One of the drawbacks to electric cars for police departments is the relatively shorter driving range. However, compared to other electric vehicles, the Performance Model 3 has a respectable range of 315 miles.
